WHEN WELDITZ TURNS A HOBBY INTO A CREATION

It’s not all serious business here at Welditz. Sometimes, our team likes to apply our engineering expertise to something a little more light-hearted.

Following our recent sponsorship and framework support for the brilliant students at DCU, and Ireland’s first Solar Powered Racing Car, our Managing Director, James Cuddihy, was inspired to put his own thinking cap on.

The result is a brilliant work-in-progress. A miniature, battery-powered electric car tailored for 5-to-7-year-olds.

While it looks like a toy, the engineering behind it is serious business. Our staff have jumped right in to help James bring this to life, placing strict emphasis on safety, and structural design. James and staff member Enda Cullen can definitely testify to it's sound structure, seen here testing it out.

• The Powertrain: Powered by a 500W, 24V motor utilising a rear-wheel-drive layout.
• The Handling: Equipped with a proper differential, suspension, and braking system to optimise handling, acceleration, and balance.
• The Safety Brains: It features a Dynamic Control PLC with Rhino Software (commonly used in mobility scooters) to precisely control motor parameters and safety features—the most critical element when designing for children.
• The Experience: The interior closely simulates the driving controls of a real car.

It’s safe to say this project has already caught the attention of everyone on the shop floor. Santa Claus might just have some stiff competition around the corner this year!
